You will remember that a few months ago we told you that we were moving to the most southerly town in Italy called Melito di Porto Salvo.
Now that the dust has settled, we thought it would be a good idea to give you a snapshot of where we live now. Don’t worry, we’ll be going into more detail about these fabulous places in future posts!
Melito di Porto Salvo
As you can see from the map, Melito di Porto Salvo is right on the toe of Italy.
It’s a beautiful seaside town, which is packed with holiday makers from as the north of Italy down to Napoli during August. However, apart from that period it is a fabulous small Italian town where everyone knows everyone else. Since we have been here, we have found that everyone is more approachable than the north of Italy. We are now friends with the local butcher, fishmonger, hairdresser, bar staff, etc, etc!
Reggio Calabria
The capital of our region is the city of Reggio Calabria. We’d read about how this city was bombed during the war, so we were not expecting a lot when we visited. However, our concerns were unfounded. As you can see from the photos, it is a picturesque city. There is the main shopping street, and then the main sea promenade. Both of these stretch the full length of the city.
Sicily
We are also a short ferry trip away from Sicily, which is just across the straits of Messina. During the summer months there’s a ferry to there from Reggio Calabria. However, all throughout the year there’s a ferry that takes 20 minutes to reach Sicily every 40 minutes from Villa San Giovanni, which is just up the coast from us.
We’ve already been over there to have a look and to try and climb Mount Etna. Check back next week for more details of this and of our other trips around this beautiful part of Italy so far!
